Who Can Baby Sign?

Contrary to popular belief signing isn't just for deaf or hearing impaired children and adults.  Signing can also be used by hearing children and also hearing children with special needs, such as Downs Syndrome, Autism and Apraxia of Speech.

Whether you want to teach children in your care collectively or run individual baby signing groups for children with special needs, Sign and Smile are here to help.

Sign and Smile encourages the use of signing with children and you don't just have to take our word for it either, Speech and Language therapists actually advocate the use of signing themselves.

We recommend that settings start signing with their charges from the age of 5 months, although it is worth noting that usually children won't start signing until they are around 6-8 months old.  However the whole of experience of signing is something not be missed, after all children can't read until they are around 5-6 years old but it doesn't mean you don't read to them now does it?  It's also never to late to start signing either because babies, toddlers and preschoolers can learn part of this fantastic nationally recognised language.
